He used to have 3 tri-axles but is down to 1 and is having trouble keeping him busy. My cousin has a lawncare business and he is so busy that he doesn't know what to do with himself.

It is harder when you are stupid Uncle Sam wants YOU We have a 2 ton dump that pretty much just sits. We get some business with our 1 ton but more people just ask to borrow it. Fish, Trucks are so difficult to make money with. There are so many things attached to trucks, Fed DOT regulations, State DOT regulations, CDL license, drug testing, Registrations, Insurance, yearly inspections, roadside inspections, drivers logs, repair logs, the documentation and record keeping for all this.

The fines for not doing the paper work and testing are greater than the fines for vehicle problems. Unless you are in a state where no one checks all these things.

Then you have what you can get paid for running a truck. Think long and hard. Go talk to someone in the business in your area.

As far as making a living with them, I say it would be tough. If your truck was set-up in a way that made it more of a niche item, such as a tailgate mounted pea-shooter, 4wd, etc. Trucks cost more to run and people want to pay you less per hour than any other piece of equipment I own. I would definately do my homework if I were you.

You may be able to find a way to make it steady and profitable, but it isn't going to be in the traditional sense of hauling and dumping. I shoulda stayed with cutting grass when I was a kid instead of playing in the dirt!

He recently paid cash for a new KW single axle truck, but he admittedly said that he will retire with that truck.

I would say that the only thing that has gotten him through is that the quarry he runs for pays a 20 ton haul minimum which they charge to the customer.

This particular guy is very shrewd and watches his pennies, I would not attempt to make a living running loads with a dump truck. If you get well connected, have the ability to do most all of your own maintenance you can make a living doing it, but having the RIGHT connections is key.

ALSO, word of warning I am mainly using the trucks for my own jobs. I would look around and see what the rates are and how much business those trucks are doing. They are a money pit tho when times are slow. The way trucks make money is they are all owned by women, blacks and Mexicans This insures you of work at all times.

Last edited by RandyB; at It's not as easy as it sounds DBE don't help contractors in building trades nearly as well as truckers. Truckers are guaranteed load hauls for all road projects at a set rate without bidding and bonding I do pretty good with my single axle. I've been at it for 38 yrs, truck is paid for, do my own repairs. I get my work by providing A1 service. You need a truck. I'll be on the job when they need it. Not when I get around to it.
